Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, aims to reduce and better manage the amount of plastic waste in businesses and households.

Alternatives to single-use plastics are for example explored with the food delivery sector and restaurants.

“Although the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the absence of international tourists in 2020 and a low number of domestic tourists to Phuket, it is a good opportunity to start improving plastic waste management. The sources of waste such as businesses, households, coastal communities, fishing or tourist boats can improve their waste prevention and management”

said Mr. Viroj Phutong, Chairman of the Phuket Environmental Foundation when kicking-off the project in November 2020.


With its focus, the pilot activity is in line with the current initiatives at the national level to reduce single-use plastics in food delivery after a significant rise due to COVID-19. Several exchanges between the government and the private sector took place and concluded in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on reducing single-use plastics in food delivery with 13 signatories in 30 September 2020.
